Exploring the Legal System in Palestine
Meet Victor Calero, a 20-year-old Law student from Ecuador currently studying at Universidad de las Américas in Quito. Victor recently participated in the Lawyers in Palestine Program organized by the Palestinian center, Go Palestine. His motivation was to immerse himself in the Palestinian legal system, expand his knowledge, learn a new language, and experience a different culture.
Engaging with Palestinian Culture
During his time at the Palestinian Center, Victor delved into the Palestinian dialect, history, cuisine, and cultural practices. He formed friendships with members of the center who provided invaluable support and guidance throughout his journey.
Insights from the Legal Field
During his internship, Victor interacted with Palestinian lawyers who shed light on the intricacies of the legal system in Palestine and the challenges posed by the Israeli Occupation. He also visited Hebron University and the Law College, where professors shared the rich history of Palestinian laws from the Ottoman period to the present Palestinian Authority laws.
Victor learned about the struggles faced by Palestinian universities, particularly law students and professors who commute to Hebron. He visited the court and a law firm to understand legal procedures and human rights violations in Palestine.
Exploring Refugee Camps and Cultural Exchange
Victor also visited a NGO supporting women’s rights and a refugee camp near Hebron, where he learned about the refugee situation and the efforts of the UN to improve their conditions. He took Arabic classes to grasp the Palestinian dialect and pronunciation.
Impressed by the warmth and hospitality of Palestinians, Victor found Palestine to be safer than many Latin American countries. He felt secure in Hebron and recommends others to visit and engage with the Palestinian culture.
Embracing the Palestinian Experience
Victor’s journey in Palestine was eye-opening and transformative. He encourages others to participate in programs at the Palestinian center to gain a deeper understanding of Palestinian realities and immerse themselves in the vibrant culture.
