Overview of Different Types of Arabic Languages

  1. Shami/Levantine Arabic: Shami/Levantine Arabic is easily understood by people in the Gulf, as well as in northern African countries like Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, and Libya. Learning the Shami dialect allows you to communicate effectively with a broad audience.
  2. Modern Standard Arabic (MSA): Modern Standard Arabic, also known as Fusha or Standard Arabic, is a standardized literary form of Arabic with roots dating back to the 7th century and the Middle Ages. Similar to how Contemporary Latin is used, MSA is employed in literature, academia, print and mass media, law, and legislation. While it’s not commonly spoken as a first language, it serves as a pluricentric standard language taught in formal education across Arab countries. It differs significantly from the vernacular varieties of Arabic spoken as mother tongues in the region.
  3. Palestinian Arabic/Dialect: Palestinian Arabic is the dialect spoken by most Palestinians in Palestine and the Palestinian diaspora. It forms a continuum of dialects with mutually intelligible varieties of Levantine Arabic. In studies comparing dialects, Palestinian Arabic was found to be the most similar to Modern Standard Arabic.
