Meet Cathal from Ireland: Making a Difference in Palestine through Human Rights & Conflict Internship Program

Meet Cathal: A Journey to Palestine

Greetings, I am Cathal, a 27-year-old student from Ireland currently pursuing International Relations and Conflict Studies at Queens University Belfast. This year, I embarked on a two-week Human Rights and Conflict program in Hebron, Palestine, with a strong passion for understanding the Palestinian struggle for freedom amidst palestine/” title=”Welcoming Foreign Visitors in Palestine”>occupation. Ireland’s historical solidarity with Palestine motivated me to seek firsthand experience and immerse myself in the warm hospitality of the region.

Exploring Palestine: A Transformative Experience

My time in Hebron and at the Palestinian center was truly enriching. The vibrant city welcomed me with open arms, offering a bustling atmosphere filled with cultural experiences and genuine hospitality. From engaging with Human Rights Organizations to visiting Refugee Camps and local businesses, I witnessed the daily challenges faced by Palestinians, including navigating checkpoints and living under occupation.

Ensuring Safety in Palestine

While initial concerns about safety lingered, the organization and local Palestinians prioritized my well-being, easing any apprehensions. Hebron’s lively culture and the warmth of its people created a sense of security, dispelling any doubts about personal safety as an international visitor.

Embracing the Culture of Hebron

Exploring Hebron and neighboring cities like Ramallah and Bethlehem offered a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of Palestine. Socializing with fellow interns and local Palestinians fostered lasting friendships and unforgettable experiences, highlighting the essence of community and camaraderie in the region.

Future Plans: A Return to Palestine

Reflecting on my two-week journey, I am already envisioning a longer stay in Palestine to further deepen my understanding and contribute to my political aspirations. The transformative experience and the connections made during my internship have solidified my resolve to return. I encourage others to seize the opportunity to explore Palestine with GO Palestine and witness its beauty firsthand.
