Introduction: My Experience in Palestine
Greetings! I am Sydney Gwidt, hailing from Wisconsin, USA. My journey in Palestine was a transformative one, where I resided in Hebron for a month with a Palestinian palestine/” title=”Your Guide to Volunteering in Palestine”>host family and engaged in an intensive Arabic course at Go Palestine. The richness of my experience cannot be encapsulated in words. Throughout my stay, I explored various cities like Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Jaffa, Ramallah, and, of course, Hebron.
Exploring Palestinian Life
My time in Palestine was marked by vibrant cultural exchanges. I partook in weddings, gatherings, and intimate tea/coffee sessions, forging lasting friendships with locals and fellow international visitors. Delving into the intricacies of the occupation and daily Palestinian life, I visited organizations, museums, and refugee camps, all while honing my Arabic proficiency.
Immersing in Palestinian Culture
Despite the stark contrasts between Palestinian and American cultures, I found a sense of belonging in Hebron. The warmth and hospitality of the people, evident in their frequent invitations for shared meals and thoughtful gifts, made me feel right at home. My host family, in particular, exemplified generosity and kindness, fostering a welcoming environment.
Ensuring Safety in Palestine
Addressing common apprehensions about safety in Palestine, I can attest to feeling secure throughout my stay. The unwavering support from the center staff and my host family, coupled with their guidance on accommodations and local insights, instilled a sense of comfort. Surprisingly, I felt safer in Hebron than in many bustling American cities.
Recommendations for Future Visitors
Reflecting on my experience, I wholeheartedly encourage others to embark on a journey to Palestine and partake in the enriching programs offered by Go Palestine. This immersive experience promises lifelong connections, language enhancement, and profound insights into Palestinian culture, history, and the prevailing occupation.
