Reasons to Consider Volunteering in Palestine
After multiple visits to Palestine, I made the decision to volunteer at the Palestinian Center in Hebron, offering English lessons to primary school students. My background in International Relations and experience as a swimming teacher to children made me eager to work with kids again. This opportunity allowed me to stay in one place for an extended period and make a meaningful impact.
Volunteer Responsibilities at the Palestinian Center in Hebron
At the Palestinian Center, I conducted English classes in schools across Hebron and initiated an “English Club” for top-performing students in Grades 5 and 6. The students, although initially shy due to limited exposure to native English speakers, eventually gained confidence and actively participated in the lessons. The English Club specifically catered to girls, emphasizing the importance of education and empowering them to excel in their studies.
Highlights of Teaching Palestinian Children
Teaching in Hebron revealed the enthusiasm and energy Palestinian children bring to the classroom. Despite language differences, I incorporated Arabic into my lessons to facilitate understanding. Witnessing their eagerness to learn and willingness to engage with the material was truly inspiring. The experience of teaching daily routines and vocabulary in both English and Arabic was particularly rewarding.
Support from the Palestinian Center
The Palestinian Center provided me with the freedom to create lesson plans tailored to the students’ needs. I developed a variety of topics for the English Club, including introductions, family, hobbies, and geography. This flexibility allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the students’ learning experience and prepare resources for future teachers.
As I conclude my teaching stint and prepare to return to Australia, I look forward to seeing the progress of the English Club upon my next visit. The opportunity to make a difference in the lives of Palestinian children has been a rewarding and english-in-palestine-as-a-volunteer/” title=”Make a Difference: Teach English in Palestine as a Volunteer”>enriching experience.
