Empowering Girls Through English in Hebron
In Hebron, the Palestinian Center hosts a weekly English Club for girls from a local school, focusing on enhancing English fluency through conversation rather than traditional instruction. Volunteers engage students in games, discussions, and debates to boost their confidence in speaking with native speakers and peers.
Engi, Chris, and Connor, volunteers from Australia, Singapore, and the USA respectively, meet with female students aged 12 to 14 to practice spoken English and share their cultures. These students, attending a private school, exhibit a high level of fluency due to their English instruction.
Volunteers praise the girls at the English Club for their exceptional fluency, with some even adopting American slang terms in their speech. The interactive sessions have proven to be effective in improving the students’ language skills.
Each week at the English Club offers a new theme or activity. Students, well-exposed to English media, share their interests in popular culture, music, and literature. They also discuss their travel experiences and offer recommendations to volunteers.
Similar to their peers in the US, the girls enjoy music by artists like Justin Bieber, movies such as Frozen and The Little Mermaid, and classic literature. They also introduce volunteers to cultural practices like ‘dibs’, a grape-derived sweet dip for bread.
During discussions on travel, students reveal their international connections and experiences, showcasing their curiosity about the world. Their enthusiasm for learning English and exploring different cultures is evident in their interactions with volunteers.
The girls at the English Club exhibit a strong desire to learn, displaying politeness, creativity, and a thirst for knowledge. Volunteers are impressed by their dedication and predict a bright future for these young women as future leaders of Palestine.
